Agentic AI and Business Workflows: Separating the Real Capability From the Pitch
“Agentic” has become the word of the moment, applied to everything from a real workflow automation to a chatbot with a slightly longer system prompt. Worth being specific about what it actually means.
What a real agentic workflow does
- Takes a defined action across more than one system, not just answers a question.
- Knows when to stop and ask a human before doing anything irreversible.
- Can show you what it did and why, after the fact — not a black box.
What's just marketing
A chatbot that drafts a reply for a human to send isn't “agentic” — it's a well-built assistant. That's genuinely useful, it's just not the same thing, and conflating the two is how expectations get set wrong before a project even starts.
