AI Coding Assistants Are Changing How Fast Software Gets Built, Not How Much Judgment It Still Needs

AI coding assistants have gotten dramatically faster at producing working code. What hasn't changed is how much judgment it still takes to know whether that code is actually right.

What's genuinely faster now

  • Boilerplate and repetitive, well-understood patterns.
  • A first-draft implementation to react to and refine.
  • Exploring a few different approaches quickly before committing to one.

What still needs a human who knows what they're doing

  • Deciding the right architecture for the actual problem, not just a working one.
  • Security review — AI tools don't reliably catch their own blind spots here.
  • Knowing when generated code is subtly wrong in a way that won't show up in a quick demo.

The gap between “looks like it works” and “is actually production-ready” hasn't gotten smaller — if anything, it's more disguised now than it used to be.
