How to Automate the Repetitive Work That’s Eating Your Week
Every business has at least one task that eats hours every week and doesn’t require a human judgment call — it just requires someone to do it, over and over. That’s the automation opportunity, and most people pick the wrong first project.
Good candidates for automation
- Document processing — pulling data out of invoices, forms, or PDFs by hand.
- Lead qualification — manually reading every inbound inquiry to figure out if it’s worth a reply.
- Customer support for repetitive questions — the same five questions, answered by a human every time.
- Internal reporting — copying numbers between spreadsheets or systems on a schedule.
- Scheduling and follow-ups — anything that’s currently a recurring calendar reminder to “do the thing.”
How to pick the first thing to automate
Don’t start with the most complex process — start with the most repetitive one. Ask: does this task follow the same steps almost every time, and does doing it wrong cause real damage if it’s occasionally imperfect? If yes and no, it’s a strong candidate. If a mistake would be costly, keep a human reviewing the output at first rather than skipping the review step entirely.
The goal isn’t to automate everything at once — it’s to get one real task off your plate, prove it works, and build from there.
