Multi-Tenant SaaS Architecture: The Decisions That Are Expensive to Reverse Later
Early in a multi-tenant SaaS build, a handful of architecture decisions look like implementation details. They're not — they're the ones that are cheap to get right on day one and genuinely painful to change once you have paying customers.
The decisions that matter most early
- How tenants are isolated — shared schema, separate schema, or separate database per tenant.
- How authentication and permissions scale as the number of tenants grows.
- Whether the data model quietly assumes one tenant per account from day one.
Getting these wrong doesn't break anything at launch — it breaks once you have real customers and can't migrate the data model without real downtime. Worth the extra planning conversation before the first line of code.
