The WordPress Plugin Habit That Gets Sites Hacked
“It's just a contact form plugin” is how most WordPress hacks start. A site rarely gets compromised through some exotic attack — it's almost always a plugin nobody's thought about in years, quietly sitting there with a known vulnerability.
Where the risk actually comes from
- Plugins that are still installed but no longer maintained by their developer.
- Plugins installed once for a one-time need and never removed.
- Admin accounts with weak or reused passwords.
- Nobody checking for available updates on any kind of schedule.
The fix is boring, which is why nobody does it
Audit what's actually installed, remove what you don't use, update what you keep, and use a real password manager for admin access. None of that is exciting, but it closes most of the door most attacks walk through.
If you're not sure what's running on your site or when it was last updated, that's a 20-minute check worth doing before it becomes a 2-day cleanup.
